Truck and Bus Transportation magazine 1970

Here are the covers from Truck and Bus Transportation magazine from 1970.  The magazines aren't really mine, I have borrowed them from a friend, but I feel that as I am a Librarian and look after them much better than what he does, then really they are better off with me. I don't have July and December issue and the September copy I have does not have  a cover.

January 1970. There's an article on tri-axle bogies, one of the many technical ideas propounded to the industry each year and another article entitled Making the most of the high-torque-rise concept.

February 1970. The cover features car body shells being transhipped from rail to road at Sydney's Cook River rail-freight terminal. The truck are part of the H. & D. McRae fleet, an there is a six page article about H.& D. McRae as well.

March 1970. This edition has an article about whats available in gearboxes, transmissions etc in each make. There is also an article about M.A.N's tilt cabs, where the new range reflects French influence on driver comfort and appointments, according to the headline.

April 1970. The theme is computers. There is also an article on E.J. Burton transport, based in Sydney and providing a daily service to North Queensland.

May 1970. the cover shows I.P.E.C fitting Clark aluminium vans to their M.A.N. prime movers. There is also an article on how Whites and Diamond REOs are built at the new Brisbane plant.

June 1970. That's a CF model Bedford on the front, with a road test inside.

August 1970. The cover features an Albion Cameronian tipper and a KHL series Bedford.  There is also an article about Ready Mixed Concrete and their 38 aluminium tippers.

October 1970. That's a Sydney double decker on the front - a Leyland Alantean.

November 1970. Big feature on the 1970 British Motor Show.

This ad for Swedish Motors also appeared throughout 1972. Steven King wrote a history of the early years of Volvo in Australia which appeared in Issue 5 of Vintage Trucks and Commercial magazine www.vtcmagazine.com.au. He said that Max Winkless, who was the principal of Swedish Motors in Wollongong, imported the first three Volvos into Australia in 1967. They were F86 prime movers.

An Atkinson under water

Truck & Bus Transportation, May 1974, page 12. (Click on picture to enlarge)

We borrowed some old Truck & Bus magazines from a friend and John came across this Atkinson advertisement (above). It shows a picture of Jim Forrest's Atkinson underwater in early 1974. Apparently Jim, and a group of others, were parked at the QTT Transport Terminal in Rocklea in Brisbane. It had been raining for five days and the creek flooded. Jim heard a bit of noise outside, swung his feet off the sleeper bunk and got wet feet! Atkinson towed his truck from the terminal, stripped it back and Jim was back in operation less than eight days after the event.

John drove this same truck, which had a 671 GM, during one of his leave periods from the Tri-Ellis. This picture was taken late 1974 on the Cunningham Highway, near Inglewood.

In my next post, we will continue on the disaster theme and show a Bedford on Fire.
